LOVESCREAM- Fallin' (featuring 조예진 of 루싸이트 토끼) [Songfic][2]

It was raining again. He was sitting in his favourite corner, looking out through the smallest window in the café at the wet streets. The world lived in blue and grey. His fingers picked his paper napkin apart into little shreds in his lap.

The clock on the furthest wall showed that it was three in the afternoon. The nearby office had re-enveloped its workers back into its merciless folds and the lunchtime crowd had dissipated, which signalled the moment where Jaejoong would order a simple cup of coffee (always hot, always black) with a small english muffin and sit by his favourite corner, right at the back of the café. He would spend hours simply staring out the window everyday and the waitresses regarded him over the weeks with a certain degree of amused affection, thinking that he was a moody trust-fund baby with nothing better to do, or whatever other fantasy that Jaejoong couldn’t possibly fathom belonging in a woman’s mind. They all thought he looked pretty romantic sitting there, brooding. He knew; he could see them peeking looks at him whenever they thought he was looking out the window.

He saw water falling from the heavens, hitting hard cement before slipping and sliding over pressed tar to trickle away down the drains. Some of them (yes, he personified each raindrop) would follow the cracks in the road and diverge from their brethren to collect in huddled puddles, dreading the moment when a car would roar past and tear its rubber wheels through their placid little lives in that small puddle. Jaejoong sympathised with those puddles the most because they had no eyes, or a mouth, or even a hand to fling about, to scream at oncoming cars about swerving away and sparing their lives—

“A penny for your thoughts?” The scent of vanilla filled his nose.

Jaejoong started, blinking up at a man, clean-shaven and tall.

He was wearing an apron, drawn tight over his flat belly and tied at the waist, pristinely white. A loose chef shirt hung over his skinny frame with the cuffs folded over many times so that his skinny wrists could poke through. One eyebrow was coloured white by flour and he smelled of chocolate and butter. What caught Jaejoong's attention the most were the man’s eyes— they were clear and wickedly sharp, a spritely fire dancing within as he smiled down at Jaejoong. Black as onyx, seemingly drinking in every ounce of Jaejoong’s attention.

The man introduced himself as Junsu and held out a blueberry muffin in one hand. “I just made a fresh batch and no one wanted to try. The girls kept saying they were on a diet and I’m the only guy in the kitchen.” He shrugged and wrinkled his nose. “Consider it a free gift as a ‘thank you’ because you come almost every day.” Someone hissed at him behind the counter that sounded suspiciously like ‘Are you crazy?’ Junsu just cracked a grin and placed the muffin on the table, next to Jaejoong's coffee mug before walking, or sauntering, if a man could actually saunter down the hallway.

Jaejoong stared at the muffin for a long time. I’m not even that hungry, but it does look good and it would be rude not to at least try the man’s handmade gift. He reached out with a hesitating finger to pinch a crumble from the top before placing it on his tongue. The sweetness of vanilla contested with the tartness of blueberry and then the morsel melted away, filling his senses with a heady richness. He inhaled deeply, breathing in the scent of freshly melted butter and blueberries. This was good, really really good.

Jaejoong looked up in time to see the waitresses snatch their heads away behind the counter, giggling. Despite himself, he smiled and settled back into the chair, sipping at his coffee.

He looked out the window and continued staring at muddy puddles.

{Hours later, as she was wiping down the tables and trying very hard to balance two plates on one hand, she noticed that there was one napkin left on the table, wholly intact and unshredded. It said, “The muffin was delicious. With much thanks, Jaejoong.”}

The smell of vanilla preceded him and Jaejoong looked up in time to catch the sight of another baked confectionary cupped within small, flour-dusted hands. It had white icing in small swirls on the top and a good layer of melted chocolate around the middle. “It’s my grandma’s recipe this time. Tried and tested but I’m not sure if it goes well with black coffee…” Junsu said, placing the cupcake on the table and dusted the flour off his hands against his apron. He looked at Jaejoong once, before glancing quickly away. “Well… Um, I’m glad you liked the cupcake yesterday... Jaejoong ssi.”

“It’s raining again.”

Junsu looked at him in surprise before scratching at the side of his chin, leaving a thumbprint of flour on his jawline. “Yeah, I guess it is.” He looked out the window and the edges of his eyes softened, the black irises turning liquid like the sheeting rain outside. “It makes me want to go outside and play in the puddles sometimes, like a child all over again.” Junsu gave out a soft chuckle and made a move to turn away.

“Are you on your break?” Jaejoong had turned away from the window and was looking up at those bright eyes.

Junsu looked over his shoulder and nodded slowly. “Pretty much.” He smiled.

The skies had brightened somewhat as evening approached, making a mockery of day and night as the clouds fluffed along the heavens feeling mostly lightened of their load. The streets were basking under whatever sunlight that was left and the puddles were slowly evaporating, disappearing. Over the span of an hour, Jaejoong discovered how nice Junsu's laugh could be— at once light and husky, like heavy whipped cream.

Within a few days, Junsu discovered how much he wanted to make Jaejoong's smile normal again. It always seems crooked, like there is something holding him back from laughing with all his heart. His smile never reaches his eyes and when he looks at the cafe, he always looks sad. I wonder why...

Over the span of a month, they talked about how Junsu wanted to get a scholarship to further his culinary studies, about how Jaejoong always likes the first snowfall during winter, and how Junsu knows he will get interrogated by the girls by the counter when he returns to the kitchen. Sometimes, Jaejoong would lapse into silence and let Junsu chatter on, content in simply listening and watching how Junsu would move his hands in the air, shaping things in the world according to how he sees them.

Some days, Jaejoong would do the talking and he would make Junsu laugh by saying how ducks made him scared, and how sad he would be when the rains would end. Most of the time, Jaejoong did the laughing and Junsu would attempt the dry jokes that he heard from some hyung, or that hyung.

Some weeks, they might spend it all by simply sitting together and reading books, having long, soft-spoken conversations about the rules of the universe or how the world would be like in the future.

“If people keep polluting the world, we might as well start preparing an underground bunker just in case the ground becomes too toxic to actually walk on, don’t you think so?”

Jaejoong shrugged, stirring at his coffee, staring deep down into its depths. “I should think so.” He muttered.

“What’s the matter?” Junsu leaned forward across the table and peered at Jaejoong's downturned gaze.

Jaejoong took a deep breath, inhaling that same heady scent of vanilla and butter as he closed his eyes shut. He thinks he might be addicted to the smell. “I'm going back to work soon, and…” He opened his eyes and stared at Junsu, haunting in its intensity.

Junsu searched his face, his clear eyes clouded over by confusion. “And?”

“Will I be able to see you again?”

Junsu parted his lips, narrowed his gaze and folded his arms, scrutinising Jaejoong for a moment before he relaxed his shoulders and slowly let his arms fall to his sides. “You're seriously bothered about this aren’t you?” He asked. Jaejoong nodded his assent and continued fiddling with the mug’s handle, his spine rigid as a ruler.

“Kim Jaejoong, you thought I was talking to you simply because you're a patron of this café?”

Jaejoong snapped his head up and answered quickly. “Well, no! But…”

Junsu cocked his head to the side and his frown dried the words on Jaejoong's tongue. “Then?” He said simply. “I get off work at seven.”

A slow smile crept over Jaejoong's face as he blinked once, twice. “I’ll pick you up after work then…” He mumbled.

Your first chapter scared me so much I didn't know how to comment.

Add this chapter and it's a perfect pair, presenting Jaejoong at two extremes: one wildly, dangerously out of control, the other calm and triste.

Jae's lucky--extremely--that Junsu decided to take him on.

Thanks for your email and your work!

so interesting ... the difference between them make them perfect to each other .
I love rainy days it's have the warmth of winter and trembling of autumn..
when some people find the rain broken case which make them feel , dark , restless , hopeless, and aimless (jaejooong) ..
others can see it as joy , bless to wash the land and cool down thirstiness of dead ( junsu ) .
can't wait for the next chapie . ^^

again, welcome back.. ^^,
reading your jaesu is a breather.. glad to have you back :)
i like the serious jae here coz it brightens more the character of junsu.
the strory has the balance of sweet and bitter slice of life. and you never failed to amuse your readers with the richness of your words. the story flows like a movie and make us watch the scenes clearly. you know i TRULY ADMIRE you for that *coughenvioustoocough* should i go to cafe as well to somehow alleviate the mundaness of my so-called social/work life? whatever that is bothering jaejoong, i do hope that junsu can erase that and for him to appreciate the beauty of sun other than the rain.
thank you for sharing this :) fighting!
jae and ducks. haha~ you make me love him even more.. :)
